After graduating from Emory University in Atlanta in 1992, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandoned his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska, where he went to live in the wilderness. Four months later, he turned up dead. His diary, letters and two notes found at a remote campsite tell of his desperate effort to survive, apparently stranded by an injury and slowly starving. They also reflect the posturing of a confused young man, raised in affluent Annandale, Va., who self-consciously adopted a Tolstoyan renunciation of wealth and return to nature. Krakauer, a contributing editor to Outside and Men's Journal, retraces McCandless's ill-fated antagonism toward his father, Walt, an eminent aerospace engineer. Krakauer also draws parallels to his own reckless youthful exploit in 1977 when he climbed Devils Thumb, a mountain on the Alaska-British Columbia border, partly as a symbolic act of rebellion against his autocratic father. In a moving narrative, Krakauer probes the mystery of McCandless's death, which he attributes to logistical blunders and to accidental poisoning from eating toxic seed pods. Erin Hunter is a collective artist. The Warriors series is one of the best series in the history of Children's Literature. This series is for emergent readers of 8 and up. If you are a parent and worry about the content you're children are reading: I applaud you! A lot of books that seem to be written for children are quite graphic. The graphic nature of the Warriors books does not exceed cat fights and cats that might breed with different fathers to their kits. This is actually true to nature and does not go into details of a sexual nature, yet stays in the context of reproduction. the violence is not too graphic for children and I read these books to my young, Christian niece and nephews. The cats have different clans and resemble Native American culture quite closely, which, being half Native myself, I was delighted to discover. This is an incredible series that even adults can enjoy along with their kids or alone.
This book gave a great insight of the path Chris McCandless's troubled life took.I watched the movie "Into The Wild" a few years back and have always been curious and saddened to think about Chris's journey. This book seemed to clear the story a bit. Sometimes I had a lump in my throat thinking that this is not a "character" in a made up story but a real life that seemed to yearn for a peace that only existed in his heart. Jon Krakauer does a great job of giving us a key hole view of "Alex's" life. The good times even when he had nothing. I personally feel like unfortunately Chris was a troubled individual weather it was mental imbalance or emotional disconnect and after this book I feel so sad for his torment. The movie left me disliking his parents, but this book turned that emotion completely around. And I loved the Epilogue. Thank you Jon Krakauer for that. If the movie intrigued you most definitely read the book.
I can't believe I'm sitting here writing a review on a book about cats, but after finishing this six-part series, I felt compelled to share my thoughts, as I couldn't get enough.Erin Hunter has managed to create a compelling world with richly-detailed characters and fleshed out plots that fill every emotion- happiness, sadness, loyalty, diversity, mourning, grief, revenge, and friendship.Despite being children's fiction, the themes and stories have many adult elements for reader's of all ages (I'm a thirty year old guy who unabashedly loves his pets) with a story on the level of Watership Down. You become passionate about the characters and their tribulations, and are heartbroken by the not infrequent deaths from warring clans or nature.I bought this book as light bedtime reading, and quickly purchased the remaining five. I honestly couldn't put it down and if you're looking at this, I'm confident you won't be able to either.Now that it's over, I'm so happy that I've got about 20 other books in the series to read.
I actually didn't know what I was getting when I bought this series. My son told me about it, so I decided to try it. Especially since I am an avid reader! I honestly couldn't stop turning pages! And found myself reading whenever I had a second to spare...and sometimes when I didn't! It's an interesting, fun book, in my opinion. If you love cats, it's a plus. Try the first one, you may find yourself hooked, like I was.
The reason why these ppl are writing horrible reviews because of all the compicated things pple put into these books. first of all the reason why they dont say He Or She and repeatedly saying the name Graypaw is because this isn't ONE person writing this and they are adding well writen parts to create this book. They write a part and let the next person in the team write the rest. They instead of putting "Graypaw lingered at the edge of the clearing moving his tail only slightly so he would not be noticed among his rivals" they will write "graypaw lingered at the edge of the clearing Graypaw moved his tail only slihghtly so Graypaw would not be noticed among Graypaws rivals" sothat they are specific on who thet are writing about so that they wont make a mistake like " Graypaw? Firepaw turned his head at the sound of his name Sandpaw Mewed again Graypaw? Dustpaaw flinched." that wouldnt work exactly. they tried that once and ended up making it so that graypaws parents were siblings although they were mates and had two kits Graypaw and one more who never made it to the pages and when graypaw was a day old his father retired to the elders den when he and his sister/mate were actualy supposed to be apprentices in Windclan. see now i think you regret giving a bad review when they cant help it. i hope you will enjoy this book and the rest of them. i recomend it as a book that belongs in every classroom and home. Its reaally a very thought through story that grabs you into the warriors world. Its a suspensful page turning book that ends in an exiting cliff hanger when you reach the end of every chapter. Bluestars charectar is only a majestic fearless cat and Firepaw/heart/star gives you a clear cimage as what its like to fall into a crouch and pounce on your destiny i admire Graypaws sensibale attitude when he unites with rusty in the forest. To be honest i cried when Rusty ripped his old life in half and developed the courage of a warrior. I hope you will buy this book im so happy so many people did. i suggest you give this book a five star rating and The next books to. As i ten year old fifth grader i think this review can give people the idea that this book is fit for everyone. i hope you enjoy reading about Firepaws journy through the obstacles of life a charging force in the center of time- Bravery...I gave this a onestar review so it wouldnt be lost among the milions of five stars if it was an option this book would have a six star shout out from meh...
