If you have ever dreamed of being an old world craftsman and building furniture with had tools then don't let the price of this book scare you. It is is not a cheap book but it is not cheaply made either. It is full of wonderful high definition pictures and the text is well written and easy to follow. Paul Sellers is a wonderful craftsman and a great teacher. One of the nicest things about his teaching method is that he realizes that most starting woodworkers cannot afford a bunch of expensive tools. Most writers of woodworking books and producers of woodworking videos expect everyone to have a shop full of expensive tools. Paul Sellers can get you building furniture as cheap as possible. The book starts with a basic project of building a wooden spatula and then moves into dovetailed boxes and tables built with mortise and tenon joints. Only basic tools are needed. A couple of chisels, a gouge, a hand saw, a number 4 plane, a spoke shave, and a decent hand saw with some basic layout tools will get you started. He even has a method for getting a razor edge on tools with out spending hundreds on sharpening equipment. The book is a companion to the Working Wood videos. If you want to learn how to use hand tools I highly recommend them.

A very helpful book, especially along with the videos on DVD (haven't watched or bought) or via his YouTube video page. I know a little (enough to get myself into trouble), and this book is helping to fill things out. I had considered quite a few books of this type, and went with this. Sellers' attitude is encouraging and realistic. He also has a book about hand tools and sharpening (although this book has a good sharpening chapter. I'd tell anyone who's just starting with woodworking (even if you now think you'll just do one bookcase and that's it) and knows little about tools to think about getting that (which I haven't read) or the Aldren Watson book, "Hand Tools" (which I have read to expand what knowledge I had thanks to my father and TOH).

Excellent for a beginner who is serious about giving woodworking a try using hand tools. Paul Sellers is a wonderful teacher, and this book has projects that builds your skills progressively. You can find his blog, YouTube series, and online classes Woodworking Masterclasses. I love his no-nonsense approach to basic tools so he's not trying to sell anything, and you don't have to spend a fortune on tools. His 50+ years experience and true love of this craft are found on each page of the book. I've thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am working my way through the progressive projects. As my skills advance, I'll enroll in his premium online classes. Yes, he's that good :-) Highly recommend

I've been enjoying watching Paul Sellers on YouTube, am planning on building the jointer's workbench, and bought the book because it has more detailed written instructions for constructing it. What I saw when I opened the envelope from Artisan Media is a beautiful book, chock full of outstanding photography, suitable for leaving on your coffee table! The only drawback is I have no desire to take the book into my shop... :-) Content-wise, I've read through a half-dozen chapters, and have skimmed the rest of the book within the past couple days, and I'm more than impressed with the information and illustrations contained inside. Well worth the investment!

Paul Sellers is passionate about woodworking with handtools. I started out working with power tools had little appreciation for hand tool work. Over the past year or two I've come to appreciate that little bit extra hand tools bring to a creation. Power tools do well bringing lumber to size and rough shape. Adding hand tools to the mix reveals the skill of the artisan. I'm not sure many people other than an artisan with wood can appreciate the difference but it is gratifying to produce. On second thought, people do appreciate hand craftsmanship. It's just not obvious to them why the do.Paul does an excellent job teaching the steps and skills needed to prepare and work with hand tools both in this book and his videos. The steps are simple and if followed will yield amazing results. It is so gratifying to have sharpened a plane blade that then produces a shaving that is so thin it has only one side! (bad woodworkers joke)If you are already skilled with power tools this would be a good book to acquire. You will understand the concepts of woodworking and quickly adopt these techniques. I wouldn't want to start out woodworking with hand tools unless you have a lot of time and patience. It can be discouraging spending a lot of effort flattening and squaring lumber only to make a mistake and need to start over.Learning Paul's hand tool methods will also make you a better power tool user. An excellent companion book is "Hybrid Woodworking" by Marc Spagnuolo.

Paul sellers is awesome! I love the course and the videos on you tube clear up what is in print. I found some of the writing on positional orientation and technique had my mind wandering in regards to the true written intent. Paul stretches the limitations of his command of the English language, at times, reinventing the wheel-- leaving the reader lost in a sea of confusion. One important note: before you attempt the book shelf wall unit, understand that the measurements do NOT correspond to American 1x6 stock. Our 1x6 are 6/8 not 7/8. The 1/8 difference will be daunting to the students this book is intended for: novices. Again, the videos on utube clear up any ambiguities. This truly is a great way to learn hand tool wood craft core basics distilled to their essence by a pro with an omniscient viewpoint on the subject matter; however, you need to tread cautiously, for the aforementioned reasons. Also, to his credit, Paul likes to be efficient and likes to save money. Additionally, Mr. Sellers is a staunch subscriber to the k.i.s.s. philosophy. You can do no better than Paul's book if you plan on starting the journey to learning hand tool wood craft for a trade or as a means of being a productive member of today's societal leisure class. Bravo!
