So I'm getting into woodworking, and have always loved Chinese furniture. So this book pops up as a recommendation, and it is a pretty awesome book. It was originally printed in Beijing before the Communist revolution, so it has some pretty cool looking furniture drawings and diagrams in it. Give a brief history of Chinese furniture as well as some helpful schematics on construction which i was really interested in. Wish that they would have bigger diagrams and schematics but they are usable. I had originally got the kindle version but it was a bit too hard to read and see the details, so I got the book. Wish it was also in color, but it is a reprint from the 1940's original. Otherwise if you are interested in furniture making and woodworking, this would be a great book to have in your collection.

I'm an American Chinese. I'm always fascinated by ancient Chinese furniture design where no glue or nail is used.The book is written by a Germany scholar who lived in China before communist took over. All good stuffs are destroyed and tradition techniques are lost by brutal communism. Thanks Gustav Ecke to save our ancestor wisdom and knowledge from communist.

I bought it because I had heard that the author diagrammed some interesting Chinese joinery. But the examples of classic Ming and Qing dynasty furniture are fascinating as well. It's really worthwhile to have a personal copy of this book.

Some of the illustatrations of the joiney were not as clear as we would like, but nonetheless it is a commendable effort in bringing to the forefront the wonderful harmony, symmetry, and proportion of chinese furniture. I used this book as a reference to view some excellent examples of chinese furniture at the nelson atkins museum kansas city mo.The book lacked any details of tools and techiques. I am guessing that the reason for that is the author is an academic not a craftsman

Steven M. Stanley is a research professor in Paleobiology at the University of Hawaii. His research includes such areas as functional morphology; macroevolution; effects of changing seawater chemistry on biomineralization, reef growth, and lime sediment production; and the role of climate change in mass extinctions. He received an A.B from Princeton University in 1963 and a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1968. Before moving to the University of Hawaii he was on the faculty of the University of Rochester for two years and the faculty of Johns Hopkins University for thirty-six years.Dr. Stanley has written three previous editions of Earth System History and a total of three editions of its predecessors, Earth and Life Through Time and Exploring Earth and Life Through Time. His other books include Principles of Paleontology (with David M. Raup), Macroevolution: Pattern and Process, The New Evolutionary Timetable, Extinction (nominated for an American Book Award), and Children of the Ice Age: How a Global Catastrophe Allowed Humans to Evolve. I believe this is a higher level of understanding the evolving development of the earth's systems from the beginning to now, the authors did a magnificent job in presenting this advanced textbook. Really enjoyed this book (was a textbook for one quarter of classes) and was disappointed when we didn't use all of it! Concepts are explained quite well and lots of pictures and graphs to ease you into all the abstracts you may find yourself reading later if heading into the sciences. I used this as a personal resource as well to help me with concepts we weren't working on in class (research within research, lol!) but I had questions about nonetheless. Well written and easy to read :)

This book is packed full of great information for anyone studying Earth Science, especially Earth System Science. It is a little advanced in its terminology so it is beneficial to have some prior knowledge in general science, however, anyone can benefit greatly from it!

This is a great textbook with beautiful images. The only part about this book I did not like is that it is a paperback and easily damages.

I remember reading another book from C.J Date some time ago: SQL and Relational Theory. At that time I was simply put off by the content as I thought it was no use from the pratical point of view. This time, I would write different review, and this is due to reading Relational Theory for Computer Professionals. For the details, read on.This time, C.J. Date takes slightly different apporach to the topic. At first you get consice and well written explanation of relational model then, you get the overview of the SQL in the contex of what you have read before. In the context of relational model. When it comes to relational model, as for all other books and video trainings, C.J. Date uses Tutorial D while explaining it's odds and ends. And here comes funny and unexpected change in my approach to the langue. When I was reading SQL and Relational Theory I was completelly against the concept of the language specially crafted just for the purpose of relational model explanation. When I was reading View Updating & Relational Theory I started to appreciate it. Now, after reading Relational Theory for Computer Profesionals, I am almost grateful to C.J. Date for defining it and using throughout his books. Thanks to Tutorial's D structure it is really easy to follow relational model's concepts.As for the book and the content, the case is simple: well written, well explained, concise. The structure of the book is really clear. First part contains details of relational model, then C.J. Date presents SQL and with each feature of the language you get desription of how should it be done using Tutorial D and how can you achieve the same thing using SQL. There are lots of examples and exercises throughout the book. What is even more important is that for each exercise you get full and well explained answer.There is one thing about this book. It is "very academic". It means that you go through lots of formulas, definitions, very formal language and you have to pay lots of attention to the content while reading. If you preffer more pragmatic approach, this book may be boring. On the other hand, if you value concise approach with really good background - go for it. I would definitelly suggest it to all the people who are familiar with SQL, but don't have relational model related knowledge, yet.

Date has definitely written his share of books on Relational Database Theory, and this, his latest, takes us once again into the intricacies of the theory underlying relational databases. With the variety of other database structures coming out, such as Graphical Databases, Object-Oriented Databases, and NoSQL, it could be that he is here trying to defined relational theories position amongst the rest.It is very heavy on theory with the early sections of the book giving much of the necessary theory needed. The first part gives the basics, such as keys, foreign keys, and other basic definitions and structures. But the language might become terse for someone coming from a straight SQL programming standpoint. His discussions on Revlars and Relational Operators is a bit thorny and difficult going in some sections. The second part leads to a certain sense of applications with his turning to transactions and database design. But for many coming from SQL, it is the third part that might be of most interest. It is here that he ties in the theory directly to SQL and where one can see things come together.Unfortunately, the book is so theory-laden, that it might be difficult for all but academians to get through. As well, throughout the book Date uses a different database language, Tutorial D, to show various concepts. This does have the advantage of being a language that he feels is closer to the pure database model, but once again, the bridge between theory and practicality is often a difficult task to do well.For those interested in a theoretical look at database design and, more precisely, relational database theory, this book might be what they are looking for. Finally found the book to review it. I read it in one sitting. Crafty Nichole does it again!Just for the benefit of those folks who read this review and aren't familiar with the Diary of an Angry Alex series: You had best start with Book 1 and follow the story along. Trust me, it's not hard to get hooked on it. The story focuses on Alex, one of the two default skins/characters in Minecraft. The other, Steve, is Alex's companion in the story. But they don't really get along. Well, just enough to deal with a villain like in this one!Each of the Diary of an Angry Alex is its own adventure. Like Alex plotting to kill Steve, Alex being mad at the villagers, and Alex and Steve meeting an evil Steve clone. Book 6 of the series finds Alex and Steve hiding in a village that they'd help build in a previous story. The village is under-attack by the "anti-Steve" (Herobrine) who's bent on destroying everything, it seems. All the stories are told from Alex's point of view. While both Alex and Steve want to get rid of the bad guy, Alex has mixed feelings about Steve and has often thought of getting rid of him as well. However, Alex is not a bad person at heart; it's just that Steve is really annoying from her point of view.I encourage you to read these stories! They are very funny, and Alex is a likable character despite her flaws and epic failures. Steve is an annoying twerp seen through her eyes, but we know he isn't a bad guy either. Aside from the characters, what will really capture Minecraft fans is how the author skillfully incorporates elements of the game into the story. It will really make you laugh. It's brilliant.I have no suggestions other than Alex - who started out as a novice miner and fighter in Book 1 - should grow more experienced and skillful in later stories. Now I wonder, will there be an "Alex vs. Steve" in the future? :)

Before I begin, I will like to say that this is my FAVORITE Crafty Nicole series.In this exciting chapter of Diary of an Angry Alex, Alex and Steve are trapped in a village that is under siege by Herobrine. They mine their way out to try to escape. After many failed attemps they finally seek shelter in a Ocean Monument. What will happen to them in side the Monument? Will Herobrine find Alex and her companion?Sorry for any spoils, I hope I didn't give away too much.This is (in my opinion) the best series for Crafty Nicole. I like how she puts reviewers in her books a the end. I've seen W. shi "JENN", Power, and Astrocat, which are at the top of my list when it comes to reviewers. (P.S. I hope you three like the compliment) I've read most of your book Nicole and my favorites are: Diary of a minecraft griever, diary of a grumpy villager, and this one.So…Yeah, this is my first review for a Crafty Nichole book (partly because you write so fast and so much. OMS this series is great! Alex fails at life, Steve can fall into a hole, what could be better? And! Yes, there's more. And! And and and! The WHOLE THING, you hear me? THE WHOLE THING IS HILARIOUS!!!!!!! There's just one teensy weensy problem.........They are FAR too short! I read fast, but they are still very small. I wish they could make a box set of them all. I would love that.

Now, this book is about Alex and Steve trapped in a city, and Alex's idea on building an army of iron golems didn't work. Herobrine attacks the village with a wither, and an army of spiders. I'm really sorry if I spoiled any parts of the story for you.
